The ISD subject group currently has 14 full-time-equivalent academic staff
including one Reader and two Principal Lecturers. The purpose of the group is to
explore, research, and teach issues in computer-assisted organisational systems
and support. To this end, the group's members have a broad range of interests
and expertise including:
- Methodology and methods
- Soft-systems methodology
- Cybernetics
- Systems analysis
- IT and IS management
- Software system design, development, and maintenance
- Human/computer interaction (HCI)
- Legal aspects of IS (including e-commerce)
- Risk analysis, assessment, and management
- Security of information systems
Thus, the primary thrust of both the teaching and research in the group is
the support of information systems across their entire life cycle. We are
concerned not only with the analysis, design, development, and deployment of
solutions, but also with the organisational and cultural aspects of information
systems. The expertise within the group allows us to work synergistically on
solving the hard problems faced by industry and other organisations.
The group is actively involved in research, some of which is supported by an
established track record in consultancy and short courses. The group is
particularly keen to develop its post-graduate research base through the
inclusion of additional MPhil and PhD students. We are also looking to increase
the level of external grant funding for leading-edge research projects. There
has been collaborative work with major organisations concerning software
maintenance, and consultancy with government departments. The group also
benefits from the School's commitment to ongoing staff development which
includes support for higher degrees and other relevant qualifications.
