All software downloadable from the MSDNAA is supplied directly by Microsoft, and not by the University. Although Microsoft provide free standalone student licence's for this software, the University may well not have a license to run many of these applications in the computer labs. So when you do start to use any of the software downloaded from MSDNAA, please make sure that you save out files in a format usable by the software packages we have in the computer labs, which may be several versions older then the latest MSDN versions.

The MSDNAA web site is fairly easy to use. It uses the cart shopping system you may be familiar with on other on-line shopping web sites.

A.
In an agreement with Microsoft, the MSDN Academic Alliance program provides this software free of charge.

Q13: How can I obtain the software ?
A.
There are 2 ways

  1. If available choose the DVD / CD Create Option in MSDNAA. Some of the more popular software titles have already been downloaded. On any PC in the 6th or 7th floor James Parsons Building go to:
Start -> All Programs - Ahead Nero -> Connect to image server
This will, for your current login session, give you a Z:\ drive. In The MSDNAA folder are the downloaded images
    r. You can burn your own CD / DVDs to take home. However, you will still need to login into MSDNAA and "purchase" the software from their web site to get the product key.
  2. Choose Secure Internet Download as your delivery option from MSDNAA. If your software requires a serial number or activation code, it will be displayed on the order confirmation page ( you can always access this through My Software). You will also receive a billing Email which will allow you to retrieve the information as well ). We recommend that you keep all Emails received from either the Program Administrator or MSDN AA (e-academy) !

Should you choose option 2, it is recommended that you only select one software title at a time, and there are 4 stages that you'll need to complete to install the software:

Authorisation

The download client will authorize itself with MSDNAA. You will then be able to select a drive and directory to download the software to.

Downloading This will download an encrypted version of the software.
Unpacking This will decrypt the software ready for us
Install This will take you to where the software has been download (e.g. C:\Temp). Your next option then is to transfer the software you have just downloaded onto a CD-R/CD-RW ready for installation onto your home PC.

Q14: How do I burn an .ISO file ?
A. You can use software such as Nero to burn the image to a cd / dvd. Start Nero and go to File -> Open, and then browse to where your .ISO file is.

Q15: I don’t have Nero are there any alternatives ?
A.
There are a number of alternatives to Nero such as Active@ ISO Burner

Q16: The file I've downloaded is a .IMG file, now what ?
A.
A .IMG file is a disk image, it's just a slightly different format than a .ISO. Both Nero & Active@ ISO Burner support .IMG files, so use them as you would with a .ISO.

Q17: I deleted the ISO I download after installation, but the application is now asking for the CD, what do I do ?
A.
Do NOT delete any downloaded images. Burn them to CD or DVD or leave them on your hard disk.

Q18: I have more than one computer at home is it possible to have another serial ?
A.
Yes we can provide more serials to you if needed, although excessive requests will need valid explanations or documentation to verify that they are not being used for illegal purposes. EMail a request for a new serial to cms-techs@livjm.ac.uk specifying the product concerned.

Q19: I downloaded the installation file called downloader how come it won't run ?
A.
This happens if you are using the web browser FireFox you must either use Internet Explorer or add the .exe extension if necessary and double-click the file.

Q20: MSDNAA says I have run out of downloads can I have more ?
A.
Yes you can request more downloads by using the request additional downloads link in MSDNAA.

Q21: If my download times out or I get disconnected, how do I continue my software download and installation ?
A. If you were in the middle of downloading the software itself, there will be a shortcut icon saved on your desktop that will allow you to resume your download. Double-click on the icon to begin again. If you don't see the shortcut icon on your computer desktop, you can use the "Request Re-Install" function in the Support section.

Q22: Is the software permanently unlocked by the license or "key" ?
A. No - the key allows you to install the software once. After that, if you need to re-install the software, you will need to use the "Request Re-Install" option from the Support section of the site. This is how their system helps to reduce software piracy.
