What if?

Username & Passwords
Your username for Perception is made up of 8 letters, ENR + the first letter of your first name and the first 4 letters of your last name. For example if you are called Joe Bloggs,  your user name is ENRJBLOG.  If some one else shares exactly your username when constructed then the username may look like ENRJBLO1.

Both your username  and your password has been sent to you through email.

If for some reason have not received the email (subject title: Your Perception User Name and Password ENRCF1157) then the office in CMS (in room 703b) has a list of passwords for this assessment.  To get your password you will need to produce your student ID card.

Logging in
To login to Perception click the link http://perception.cms.livjm.ac.uk/q/perception.dll
and enter your username, then password and click on Enter.

Assessment
The assessment  is web based, this means that you submit your answers via a web browser, either within the university or outside (say at home!).  When you log into Perception you will get to a screen that looks very similar to this....

1) Assessment Questions
These are the questions that go towards your coursework mark.   You can attempt the Assessment questions more than once but each time you attempt an assessment you will get a different question.  The best mark you achieve for any particular assessment will be the one that goes towards your final mark.

Your answer will NOT be recorded until you click on the Submit button. Clicking on Submit is exactly the same as handing in that question!  Once Submit is clicked you cannot go back and do that exact question again, but you can attempt that assessment again (but the question is the same style but different).

Coursework Structure
There are 20 different assessments: 20 assessments covering different aspects of the Derive computer algebra package.

You have three weeks to complete the assessment starting from the 20th March till 7th April (5.00 p.m.) 2006.

Unfinished Assessments
If you should start an assessment and have not finished it (by clicking the submit button) and you decide to log off (and have a cup of tea) or the computer crashes.  Then you can restart the exact same assessment by putting a tick in the Show list of any unfinished assessments tick box .

and then login as before.  Any assessments that you have started but not finished will be listed.  Press the START button to restart that coursework from were you left off.

Assessment Deadlines

All questions to completed by the 5.00 p.m. the 7th April 2006.

What if?

Q: I have forgotten or don't know my password.
A: You were sent it in an email with the subject heading "Your Perception Username and Password ENRCF1157". Have a look in your email inbox for that email (sort on subject).  If you have deleted it, then take yourself and your student ID card to the office in 703b and the admin staff will advise you of it.

Q: Perception will not let me log on.
A: Check that your username and password are correct.

Q: I'm getting a strange error message when I try to log on.
A: It may well be that the server has gone down, this happens occasionally and is a nuisance I know.  Ring the CMS Technicians on 2462 (0151 231 2462 from outside the university) and inform them that there may be a problem with the Perception server and ask whether it needs rebooting.  Alternatively, visit the technicians office in room 6.2x in Byrom Street.  After 5 minutes try logging on again.

Do not expect a response from the technicians outside of normal office hours, remember that you are expected to do these assessments during your timetabled sessions where technical assistance will be available.

Q: I've forgotten what scores I got, can I see them again?
A: Yes, log on to Perception and click on Reports and See list of results.

Q: Can I check were I'm up to with my assessments?
A: Yes, log on to Perception and click on Reports and See list of results.  If you have any ongoing assessments it will let you know.

Q: Can I change my password?
A: Yes, log on to Perception and click on Change Password.  Enter and validate your change in the usual way.

Q: I've changed my password and I can't remember it.
A: You will have to search out Dr. Etchells  and ask that he reset it.  But he won't be pleased!

Best not to change your password unless you are concerned that it's secrecy has been compromised.

Q: I've clicked on submit by error, is there anything I can do.
A: Yes, you can attempt the assessment again.  But it will be a different question.

Q: It appears that some equations are missing or incomplete.

A lot of the questions use MathML script, which is a HTML based script for displaying equations. This is relatively new technology and hence your browser may not support it. If you are doing these assessments from outside the university, i.e. at home, go to the Microsoft Website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx and get the latest version of Internet Explorer.

You may also have to visit www.java.com to down load the JAVA 2 platform.  Apparently the Windows XP installation no longer automatically installs the Java platform.

If you should get a question were you suspect that there is an equation missing or displaying incorrectly, quit the browser and try again, i.e. log on and start the unfinished assessment again. You should see all the java applets loading and it will take a time to load if you are logged on from home via a 56k modem.

As a last bit of advice I would recommend doing the assessments during your timetabled sessions as you will have support from your tutors.

Q: I have a problem that is not addressed on this web page.
A: Speak to the tutors in your Derive session labs, if they cannot address your problem then contact Dr Etchells as a last resort.
