Liverpool - around and about
Liverpool is a very old place, having received its Royal Charter from King John in 1207. It grew in size and wealth after the English Civil War in the seventeenth century to become the premier port outside London by the late eighteenth century. The city was infamously the leading port in the slave trade by around 1760, and had important links with the Americas, but also the Baltic, Mediterranean and Far East. During the nineteenth century steam and sail competed in an ever growing trans-Atlantic trade. The two-world wars took their toll on the city, but Liverpool continued to triumph through the music scene. In the twenty-first century, Liverpool is looking forward. It is a wonderful time to visit Liverpool with it achieving the City of Culture for 2008 award, Liverpool has a vibrant and exciting feel.
Liverpool is well serviced by planes, trains, and buses. John Lennon Airport is nearby, bus no. 80A is frequent and runs between the airport and town centre. Manchester Airport is about an hour away by coach or train, both terminating in the town centre. Local bus services are quite good.
