This is a synergistic partnership bringing together expertise in health software and systems engineering and manufacturing engineering. The project relies on the application of advanced software methods to progress the discipline of health informatics and decision support systems, and so requires the integration of expertise from these three fields and the direct participation of end-users partners in the proposed work. The Consortium partners have strong research track records and have established international reputations for their work. They have worked together on successful project in the past so have already developed a good working relationship. This previous experience also means that we will not face the communication difficulties common in multi-disciplinary projects. In addition, both partners have extensive experience of working with industry and are committed to the exploitation of research.

The following researchers who have agreed to participate in the consortium in an advisory capacity, and by granting access to patient data and, in a controlled manner, to individual patients:

  • Dr. S. O?Reilly, consultant oncologist at the Royal Liverpool and Clatterbridge Hospitals, who will provide appropriate access to patients data and individual patients. Dr. O?Reily has expressed strong support for the proposal and will commit time and data resources towards the implementation and evaluation of support tools for clinicians and for patients. Most importantly, she will be involved in the management of the research from the start.

  • Mr. Ric Swindell, Principal Statistician at Christie Hospital, who has extensive expertise in the design and evaluation of statistical models for medical inference, and has provided patient data as well as expert guidance throughout the previous five years of research into survival modelling.

  • Professor Mark Bellis, from the Public Health section of the School of Health at John Moores University, who is an expert in performance evaluation of healthcare and leads the North West Public Health Observatory.

  • Prof. P.J.G. Lisboa is in the Statistics and Neural Computing Research Group in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the Liverpool John Moores University. The group?s research is focused on the application of decision support methodologies to medical and business applications. Long-standing collaborative research with industrial and healthcare partners has built a basis of expertise in the design and performance evaluation of statistical and neural network inference models, as well as models for segmentation and visualisation of high-dimensional data. In this proposal, that expertise is combined with experience in computer-based methodologies for the design, implementation and evaluation of interactive multi-media systems, counting also upon direct user involvement from a range of technical and clinical specialists.

  • Prof. A. Taleb-Bendiab is a member of the Distributed Multimedia Systems Engineering Research Groups, and leader of the self-adaptive research group in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the Liverpool John Moores University. The principal interests of the group include development of methods and supporting tools for distributed intelligent systems for collaborative work. The main research interests includes methodologies for organisational and process improvement, systems modelling, adaptive software engineering, decision-support systems, database visualisation and software agents. Also, has other relevant expertise in the area of legacy data and systems evolution.

We will also consult with Dr. P. Maguire at the Cancer Research Centre at Christie Hospital, who has published on the psychological and other key issues surrounding communication with cancer patients. Together, the consortium members provide expertise on all areas of the proposed research.
